In 1979, the GRiD Compass was invented by Bill Moggridge, and it shows a great example that resembles a more modern laptop. NASA utilized this machine at their space shuttle program within a few years after it launched.

In 1981, the first real laptop computer, the Osbourne I, was developed. It had a 5″ display and weighed almost 25 pounds.
